Performing a Just Add Power Device Swap Test

Overview

Just Add Power devices touch all sources and displays in a system, making them an integral part of an AV system. When troubleshooting, it is sometimes necessary to determine if the Just Add Power device is the cause of the problem or if another piece of infrastructure is at fault. Isolating the Just Add Power device will determine this.

Swapping a Just Add Power device is useful under any of these circumstances:

  • A video, audio, or control issue is isolated to a single display
  • A video, audio, or control issue is isolated to a single source
  • A single physical connection is suspected to be at fault
    • Source or display
    • HDMI cable
    • Transmitter or Receiver
    • Network cable

Swap Test Instructions

  1. Identify the Transmitter or Receiver that is suspected to be causing the issue. This is the Suspect Device.
  2. Identify a 2nd Transmitter or Receiver that is working correctly and is the same model as the Suspect Device. This the Control Device.
  3. Disconnect all cables from the Control Device. Take the Control Device to the location of the Suspect Device.
  4. Disconnect all cables from the Suspect Device. Reconnect all of those cables to the Control Device, so that it has taken the place of the Suspect Device.
  5. VERY IMPORTANT! Take the Suspect Device to the location where the Control Device was previously connected. Connect all cables to the Suspect Device, so that it has taken the place of the Control Device. If this step is not done, the results of the Swap Test may not be valid.
