Overview
PlayStation consoles rely on the connected display’s EDID to determine supported video formats, HDR capability, and maximum output resolution. When connected through a Just Add Power system, the console reads EDID from the Encoder. Proper configuration ensures that PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro), PlayStation 5 (PS5), and PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) output stable, compatible video across MaxColor Series, Ultra Series, and Omega Series.
PlayStation Models — Capabilities Comparison
| Console | Max Output Resolution / Refresh | HDR Support | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 | 1080p @ 60 Hz | Yes (HDR10) | No 4K output |
| PS4 Pro | 4K @ 60 Hz | Yes (HDR10) | 4:2:0 chroma typical at 4K |
| PS5 (standard) | 4K @ 60 Hz | Yes (HDR10) | None |
| PS5 Pro | 4K @ 60 Hz / 4K 120 Hz / 8K | Yes (HDR10 + enhanced rendering + upscaling via PSSR) | None |
Recommended Settings for Just Add Power Systems
Configure PlayStation consoles and EDID according to the Just Add Power product series in use.
MaxColor Series

- HDR Support: Full HDR10 compatibility
- Chroma / HDMI Output: YCbCr 4:2:2 (preferred) or RGB High
- Audio: Stereo or Multichannel
Ultra Series
- Recommended Output: 4K30 SDR for 4K; use 1080p60 for HDR content
- HDR Support: Supported at 1080p60 and 4K30 only
- Not Supported: HDR at 4K60 — console will fall back to SDR or lower refresh
- HDMI Output: RGB
- Audio: Stereo or Multichannel
Omega Series
- Recommended Output: 1080p60 SDR only
- HDR Support: Not supported
- 4K Output: Not supported — signal will downscale to 1080p
- HDMI Output: RGB or YCbCr
- Audio: Stereo or Multichannel
⚠️ HDR / 4K Limitations
- Ultra Series cannot reliably support HDR at 4K60 — use 1080p60 for HDR content.
- Omega Series does not support HDR or 4K output.
PlayStation Console Settings
- Go to Settings → Screen and Video.
- Select the recommended resolution for your Just Add Power product:
- MaxColor Series: 4K60
- Ultra Series: 4K30 (or 1080p60 if using HDR)
- Omega Series: 1080p60
- Set HDR to:
- MaxColor Series: “On When Supported”
- Ultra Series: On (only at 1080p60 or 4K30)
- Omega Series: Off
- Under 4K Video Transfer Rate, select:
- MaxColor Series: Automatic
- Ultra Series: -1 (reduce bandwidth to help stability)
- Omega Series: not applicable
Set Encoder EDID
Use the steps below to configure EDID on the Encoder connected to the PlayStation. Each product series requires specific EDID settings for optimal performance.
- Log into the web interface of the Encoder connected to the PlayStation console.
- If the interface cannot be accessed, configure a static route using: This enables your PC to reach the Just Add Power devices.
- Open the Video tab and scroll to EDID Settings.
- Recommended EDID Settings by Product Series
- MaxColor Series
- Startup EDID: Built In HDR
- Maximum Video Resolution: 4K60
- Maximum Audio Format: Stereo or Multichannel
- Ultra Series
- Startup EDID: Built In
- Maximum Video Resolution: 4K30 — for HDR, plan to use 1080p60 output in console settings
- Maximum Audio Format: Stereo or Multichannel
- Omega Series
- Startup EDID: Built In
- Maximum Video Resolution: 1080p60
- Maximum Audio Format: Stereo or Multichannel
- MaxColor Series
- Click Apply.
- The video may briefly drop while the updated EDID is applied. If the PlayStation does not adjust automatically, power-cycle the console and display chain (see Reset Sequence below).
Reset / Power-Cycle Sequence
After making EDID or video-setting changes, follow this power-cycle order to ensure the console and display properly renegotiate video format:
- Turn off the PlayStation console.
- Power off the Encoder.
- Power off any connected Decoder.
- Power off the Display (TV or monitor).
- Power on the Display first.
- Power on the Decoder.
- Power on the Encoder.
- Power on the PlayStation console.
⚠️ Important HDR / Output Warnings
- Ultra Series does not support reliable 4K60 HDR — using HDR at 4K on Ultra may result in no picture or fallback to SDR.
- Omega Series only supports 1080p — all 4K or HDR output will be disabled.
- PS5 Pro may offer 8K or high-frame-rate modes, but those often **cannot** be carried over by Just Add Power video systems.
Result: With the recommended console, EDID, and Encoder settings — plus the reset/power-cycle procedure — your PlayStation consoles (PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Pro) will deliver stable, compatible video and audio across all Just Add Power Series systems.
