Overview
Use this checklist to plan, install, configure, and verify a Just Add Power system with AMP. Complete the sections in order, following the requirements for your product series and configuration method.
Planning
- Use Plan a Just Add Power System to select the product series and models that support the required video, audio, and control features.
- For standard source-to-display video distribution, select Encoders and Decoders from the same product series. Verify compatibility separately for specialty devices and systems retaining 2G Series hardware.
- Confirm Encoder and Decoder compatibility before combining product series.
- Choose Standardized or Alternate Configuration before selecting switches and control system drivers.
- Document the sources, displays, device locations, switch connections, and required accessories.
- Coordinate network addressing, routing, and control system requirements with the installer or network administrator responsible for the site.
Systems with 2G Series hardware: AMP 2G Legacy Mode requires AMP 2.0.0 or later and L Series firmware. It is available only in Standardized Configuration. Review 2G Legacy Mode compatibility and capabilities before selecting hardware.
Hardware
- Provide an Encoder for each source and a Decoder for each display, accounting for any models that provide multiple inputs or outputs.
-
Select managed gigabit Ethernet switches appropriate for the configuration:
- Standardized Configuration: Use AMP-supported switch models and firmware.
- Alternate Configuration: Verify that the network meets the Multicast Switching requirements.
- Allow enough switch ports for all device connections, network access, and inter-switch links.
- Verify the required power method for each model. Provide sufficient PoE ports and total PoE budget, or the appropriate external power supplies.
- Provide a control system and a driver compatible with the selected configuration method.
- Provide a computer suitable for executing AMP and connecting to the system by wired Ethernet.
Cabling
- Provide a dedicated Cat5e or better Ethernet cable run from the switch location to each Encoder and Decoder using a copper network connection.
- Test the installed cable runs and terminations for Gigabit Ethernet operation.
- Use passive HDMI cables from each source to its Encoder and from each Decoder to its display. Select cables that support the signal bandwidth at each connection. See passive HDMI cable guidance.
- For multi-switch Standardized systems, provide supported 10Gb SFP+ DAC cables or fiber cabling with compatible SFP+ transceivers. Confirm sufficient bandwidth for simultaneous streams using the multi-switch requirements and bandwidth guidance.
- Label both ends of each cable and record the associated source or display, device, switch, and port.
Configuration
- Download AMP and review the setup guidance for the selected configuration method.
-
Prepare the switches and connect equipment in the order required by the AMP workflow:
- Standardized Configuration: Follow AMP's instructions to configure the supported switches and Just Add Power devices.
- Alternate Configuration: Have the installer or network administrator complete the switch, VLAN, multicast, and routing configuration before configuring the Just Add Power devices with AMP.
- Complete device discovery, firmware updates, and configuration. Resolve missing or incompatible devices before proceeding.
- Save the AMP Report and compare its device assignments and switch connections with the installation records.
Network Access
-
Standardized Configuration: Configure permanent access from the Data Network to the Just Add Power Network using the routing information in the AMP Report.
- Recommended: Add a Static Route to the site router.
- Alternative: Configure the control processor's default gateway when router static routing is unavailable and only the processor requires access.
- Alternate Configuration: Have the network administrator verify inter-VLAN routing, any required static routes, and firewall permissions between the control system and the Just Add Power devices.
- Confirm that the control processor can reach the device IP addresses required by its drivers.
Control System
- Select a compatible driver from the Control System Integration resources.
- Use the AMP Report to enter the required device IP addresses and Encoder and Decoder assignments.
- For Standardized Configuration, target a Just Add Power device with the switching driver. For custom integration, use the JPSW switching API.
- For Alternate Configuration, use a driver or custom integration that supports Multicast Switching control.
- Configure any required source or display control, including RS232, IR, or CEC where supported.
Verification
- Use AMP's Gather Details tool to confirm that all expected devices are present, have the appropriate firmware, and report the expected network link speed.
- Test each source on each intended display. Confirm video resolution, audio format, and reliable source switching.
- In multi-switch systems, test sources routed between switches with the expected number of simultaneous streams active.
- Test all installed control functions and any additional features, such as USB, audio routing, or video walls.
- Confirm that the system resumes normal operation after a controlled restart.
- Save the final AMP Report, cable and port map, network settings, and control system documentation with the job records.
