In addition to the web-based firmware running on the 2G+4+ Tiling Transmitter, there are two underlying micro-processors that can only be updated using special tools from Just Add Power. While we aim to provide as many updates through the web firmware, occasionally updates to the micro-code are needed to address bugs or add new powerful features. This article reviews the steps and tools needed to perform an update to the 2G+4+ Tiling Transmitter microcode.
Native Windows PC running Windows 7 or Later (Mac is specifically unsupported)
USB Direct Cable (USB -> 4-pin Molex)
SyncMOS MSM9066 (USB Dongle)
SyncMOS Cable (5-pin -> 4-pin Molex)
Download the 2G Tiling Transmitter microcode files.
Extract the contents of the Zip file to an easily accessible location
Run the "USB Direct Setup" program
Run the "SMAP 1293 Setup" program
Install the "PL-2303" driver at the end of the setup wizard
With the Tiler Powered OFF, connect the USB Direct Cable from your PC to the 4-pin Molex connector on the bottom of the Tiler (illustrated below)
Turn ON the Tiler, and wait for Windows to "Install" the newly connected device.
Once Windows has finished installing the Generic Device, open your Device Manager, right-click on the "Unknown Device" under "Other Devices" and select "Update Driver"
Choose to "Browse my computer for driver software". Browse to the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Spansion\FLASH USB DIRECT Programmer\driver\Win7
Once the driver update is complete, Device Manager will list the USB Direct as a COM Port. Take note of the COM Port number.
Open the "USBDirect" software
Select "MB9AF314L/M/N" from the Target MCU List
Click "Open" and browse to the location where you extracted the zip file. Select the file named "Load with USB Direct.srec"
Change the COM to reflect the number assigned by your PC to the USB Direct Tool (from Step 5)
Click "Full Operation(D+E+B+P)"
Connect the SyncMOS Cable to the SyncMOS USB Dongle as shown below
Connect the SyncMOS USB Dongle to your PC, and the 4-pin Molex to the Tiler as illustrated below
Open the "SyncMOS SMAP" program
Use Writer 9066
If prompted, update the firmware on the SyncMOS Dongle. Select the default values the tool chooses for you
Click the "Import Settings" icon in the top-right corner. Browse to the location where you extracted the zip file. Select the file named MSM9066 Settings for 2G+4+.smap
Click the "Select" button to the right of "Code" in the main SMAP window. Browse to the location where you extracted the zipfile. Select the file named "Load with SMAP.hex", then click "OK"
Power ON the Tiler (if it is currently OFF), then click "Autorun"
Power-cycle the Tiler to complete the programming process
