Overview

Bonjour Browser is a network discovery utility that uses multicast DNS (mDNS) to identify devices and services on a local area network (LAN).

In Just Add Power installations, Bonjour Browser can be used to locate the IP addresses of Encoders and Decoders that are connected to the same network as the computer running the utility.

This method is particularly useful when working with factory-default devices or when the assigned IP address of a device is unknown.

Download

Using Bonjour Browser

  1. Open Bonjour Browser.

  2. Expand the Web Server (HTTP) service category.

  3. Locate the desired Just Add Power device in the service list.

  4. Select the device to view its assigned IP address.

Bonjour Browser Example

Bonjour Broadcast IDs

Depending on the product family and firmware version, Just Add Power devices may appear using one of the following Bonjour service names:

Broadcast ID Device Model
ast3-gateway Omega Series Encoders (A Firmware)
Ultra Series Encoders (A Firmware)
ast3-client Omega Series Decoders (A Firmware)
Ultra Series Decoders (A Firmware)
JustAddPower-TXABCDEF Omega Series Encoders (B Firmware)
Ultra Series Encoders (B Firmware)
MaxColor Series Encoders
JustAddPower-RXABCDEF Omega Series Decoders (B Firmware)
Ultra Series Decoders (B Firmware)
MaxColor Series Decoders

Tip: For devices that appear as JustAddPower-TXABCDEF or JustAddPower-RXABCDEF, the final six characters match the last three pairs of the device's MAC address. This provides a quick way to identify a specific Encoder or Decoder when comparing Bonjour Browser results to device labels, AMP reports, or switch MAC tables.

Factory Default Devices

Factory-default Just Add Power devices use Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA).

When connected directly to a computer or to a network without a DHCP server, the device will automatically assign itself an address within the 169.254.0.0/16 subnet.

If the device is connected to a network that provides DHCP services, it will receive an IP address from the DHCP server instead.

Note: APIPA addresses are dynamically assigned. The exact IP address will vary from device to device.

Next Steps

After identifying the device IP address, see How to Access a Device (Omega, Ultra, and MaxColor Series) for instructions on connecting to the device.
