Multi-Switch Considerations for AMP Standardized Systems
Overview
AMP supports up to 63 switches in a single Standardized Configuration system, also known as a VLAN Switching System. Use multiple switches when the required device count or installation layout cannot be accommodated by one supported switch.
Before you begin: Multi-switch AMP Standardized Configuration systems require switches from the same manufacturer, 10Gb SFP+ interconnects, and sufficient bandwidth between switches. Verify switch compatibility and bandwidth requirements before designing the system.
Multi-Switch Requirements
- All switches must be from the same manufacturer.
- All switches must include 10Gb SFP+ ports.
- Switches must be interconnected using supported SFP+ modules or DAC cables.
- AMP uses trunk links and link aggregation groups (LAGs) between switches.
- Switch 1 reserves its last RJ45 port for the Network Uplink connection to the Data Network or control system.
- Sufficient PoE capacity must be available for all connected devices.
Stack vs Trunk
AMP Standardized Configuration supports multi-switch systems in trunk topology.
See Stacking vs Trunking for an explanation of these connection methods.
Bandwidth Considerations
Size the inter-switch capacity using the combined average bandwidth of all Encoders across all switches in the system. Selecting supported switches and 10Gb SFP+ interconnects does not, by itself, confirm that sufficient bandwidth is available.
Before finalizing the switch layout, follow Plan Network Bandwidth for Just Add Power Systems to calculate the required capacity, allow headroom, and account for Link Aggregation Group (LAG) limitations.
Inter-Switch Port Allocation
The number of SFP+ ports on each switch and the number of switches in the system determine how many physical links are available between neighboring switches.
AMP Standardized Configuration allocates half of a switch's SFP+ ports toward one neighboring switch and the other half toward another, allowing switches to connect in a chain topology.
For example, a switch with four 10Gb SFP+ ports provides two connections toward each neighbor. Each pair provides 20 Gbps of nominal aggregate capacity. The four ports do not provide 40 Gbps to each neighbor.
Confirm that the links available between neighboring switches provide sufficient capacity for the combined average bandwidth of all Encoders. Follow the inter-switch port assignments provided by AMP.

SFP+ Cables
Connect switches using compatible 10Gb SFP+ DAC cables or fiber optic cabling with compatible SFP+ transceivers. Typical CatX wiring is not a substitute for these inter-switch connections.
Confirm that each DAC cable or transceiver module is supported by the switch model where it will be installed. For fiber connections, select transceivers and fiber suitable for the required distance.
You can find SFP+ modules on Luxul's website, Cisco's website, or Netgear's website. Compatible third-party modules may also be used.
Supported Inter-Switch Connections
- Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables
- Fiber optic cabling with SFP+ transceivers
- Compatible third-party SFP+ modules
Connection speed: AMP Standardized multi-switch systems require 10Gb SFP+ inter-switch connections. Standard 1Gb RJ45 switch ports cannot be used as inter-switch uplinks.

Supported Switches: TP-Link
All TP-Link models listed below have front-facing ports.
Support for SG3428XMPP and SG3452XMPP was introduced in AMP 2.0.1. Both models provide four 10Gb SFP+ ports.
Match the exact model and hardware version. TP-Link models with and without the TL- prefix are different hardware models. Check the supported firmware requirements for the specific hardware version, including any maximum firmware limit.
