Overview
Just Add Power Omega and Ultra Series systems support KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) over USB, allowing USB peripherals connected at a Decoder to control a source connected to an Encoder.
For a broader explanation of KVM use cases and examples, see: KVM Support Overview
Supported Firmware
Use the latest firmware available from Omega Series and Ultra Series Firmware when following this article.
If an update is needed, follow How to Update Firmware on a Device to maintain firmware compatibility across the system.
KVM Commands
To establish or disconnect a USB connection, execute the appropriate command on the Decoder. See CLI Commands — USB for current commands and examples.
The command reference assumes the system is running the latest firmware for its series. If the system uses older firmware, review the firmware information in this article before executing commands.
Commands for Older Firmware
Earlier firmware uses different commands to establish the KVM connection. Execute these commands on the Decoder.
| Firmware | Connect Command | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| B2.0.0 through B2.3.9 | usb start |
May briefly disconnect and reconnect other active KVM sessions. |
| B1.0.0 through B1.2.1 | video start |
Causes a brief video interruption. |
Firmware B3.0.0 and later uses the USB connection and disconnection commands documented in the current command reference.
Supported KVM Devices
Omega and Ultra Series systems support up to five (5) USB devices simultaneously controlling a single Encoder. If five USB devices are already connected and a sixth device attempts to connect, the system will block the new device from connecting (the existing five devices remain connected).
USB Bandwidth and Priority: Omega and Ultra Series devices support a maximum aggregate USB bandwidth of 75.7 Mbps. Audio and video services always take the highest priority and will consume bandwidth as needed. Due to the variable nature of audio and video bandwidth usage, the remaining (surplus) bandwidth available for other USB services—including KVM—is limited and may fluctuate depending on system activity.
Supported USB device types include USB 2.0 Bulk devices, such as:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Touchscreen
- Gaming controller or joystick
- USB flash drive
- PTZ camera control devices
