Access an Encoder or Decoder webUI (2G Series and 2G Legacy Mode)

Overview

Use an Encoder or Decoder webUI to view device information and manage available settings. The pages and features available depend on the device model and firmware.

Example Just Add Power device webUI

To open the webUI, you need the device's IP address and a network connection that can reach it. Choose the instructions that match your connection:

  • Established system: Access a device through the site's existing network configuration.
  • Local or direct connection: Access a standalone device connected to the same local network as your computer or directly to its Ethernet adapter.

Established System

Keep Encoders and Decoders connected to their assigned switch ports. Use the AMP Report or existing system documentation to identify the device IP address and required network access settings.

  1. Connect your computer's Ethernet adapter to the Data Network. For a typical site network, leave the adapter set to obtain an IP address automatically through DHCP.

  2. Temporarily disable Wi-Fi if it could cause the computer to use a different network connection.

Disable the Wi-Fi adapter in Windows Network Connections

  3. Locate the IP address of the Encoder or Decoder in the system report.

  4. Confirm that your computer can reach the Device Network:

    • AMP Standardized Configuration: Access from the Data Network requires routing to the Just Add Power Network. If access is not already configured, follow Set Up a Static Route for an Established Just Add Power System. Use a Router Static Route for permanent access or a Temporary Route on a PC for service access.
    • AMP Alternate Configuration: Follow the site's network design. A computer on the same subnet and VLAN as the device can connect directly. Access from another subnet requires routing and any necessary network permissions.
    • Established JADConfig system: Use the device IP addresses and static route information from the existing system report.
  5. Open a web browser and enter http:// followed by the device IP address in the address bar.

  6. Confirm that the page belongs to the intended Encoder or Decoder before changing settings.

Missing system information? Use AMP's Gather Details tool to retrieve current information from an accessible AMP system. For an unfamiliar installation without usable documentation, follow the Just Add Power System Takeover Guide.

Local or Direct Connection

Use this method for a standalone device, a factory-default device, or an isolated device being serviced.

Disconnect the Encoder's HDMI input before connecting it to a local data network. Video traffic on a network that is not configured for Just Add Power can overwhelm the network and interrupt other devices.

  1. Connect the device using one of these methods:

    • Local network: Connect the device and computer to the same local network. Power the device using a compatible PoE switch or its supported power supply.
    • Direct connection: Connect the device to the computer's Ethernet adapter. Provide power using a supported power supply or compatible PoE injector.

  2. Temporarily disable Wi-Fi if it could interfere with the wired connection.

Disable the Wi-Fi adapter in Windows Network Connections

  3. Identify the device IP address. If the address is already documented, continue to the next step. On Windows, use Bonjour Browser Device Discovery:

    • Open Bonjour Browser.
    • Select Web Server (HTTP).
    • Locate the device and record the address shown under IP Address.

Discovery names vary by device and firmware. See the linked discovery guide for service-name references.

  4. Check the computer's Ethernet IPv4 settings. If the computer and device are already on the same subnet, no address change is needed. Otherwise, assign the computer an unused address in the device's subnet using the device's actual subnet mask.

    • Factory-default device using a 169.254.x.x address: Set the computer to 169.254.100.200 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0, provided that address is unused.
    • Previously configured device: Use its documented IP address and subnet mask. Do not assume the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
    • Example: For a device at 192.168.100.129 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0, the computer could use 192.168.100.200 with the same mask, provided that address is unused.
  5. Open a web browser and enter http:// followed by the device IP address. For example, enter http://192.168.100.129.

  6. Confirm that the page belongs to the intended Encoder or Decoder before changing settings.

  7. When finished, restore the computer's original network settings and re-enable Wi-Fi if needed.

Discovery does not confirm access: Bonjour can identify a device on the same local network even when the computer's IP settings do not allow the webUI to open. Bonjour discovery generally does not cross VLAN or routed network boundaries.

If the webUI Does Not Open

  • Check power and Ethernet: Confirm that the device is powered and has an active network link.
  • Confirm the address: Enter the device IP address in the browser's address bar, beginning with http://.
  • Check the computer's network settings: For a local connection, confirm that the IP address and subnet mask place the computer in the device's subnet without duplicating another address.
  • Check routing: For access from the Data Network, verify the destination network, subnet mask, and gateway against the system documentation. A gateway configured only on the control processor does not provide access from your computer.
  • Check the active connection: Wi-Fi, VPN software, or another network adapter may direct traffic away from the intended Ethernet connection.
